What is Yucatan peninsula?

COVERING THREE STATES, YUCATÁN, CAMPECHE, AND QUINTANA ROO, THE YUCATÁN PENINSULA IS AMONG THE MOST DIVERSE IN THE HEMISPHERE.

With its eastern border complimented by the Caribbean Sea, the Yucatán Peninsula boasts ancient ruins, rainforests, underground caves, traditional haciendas, colonial cities, offshore islands with luxury resorts and natural wonders that will satisfy even the most seasoned travelers. Bordering Belize and Guatemala, the Yucatán Peninsula maintains its close Mayan ties, observed in its inhabitants dress, language, religion and cuisine.

The very best of the Yucatan

CELESTUN

Biosphere Reserve

Located at the mouth of the most important groundwater basin in Yucatan and within the coastal corridor of wetlands, it is one of the reserves with the greatest richness of species and ecosystems, such as mangroves, dunes, petenes, low jungle and grasslands.

UXMAL

Archaeological Site

Uxmal belonged chronologically to the late classical period, from 600 to 900 A.D. and it is considered the most important city in the Puuc region. The word Puuc, which in the Mayan language means “mountain range”, refers to the architectural style of the constructions.

IZAMAL

Pueblo Magico

Izamal is located 72 km east of the City of Merida. It was one of the most important and ancient City-states of the Mayans even before Chichen Itza and Uxmal.

SINKHOLES

Yucatan Cenotes

They are perhaps the most interesting natural attraction in Yucatan. Without them the ancient Mayan people would have lacked sufficient fresh water, as there are no rivers or lakes in Yucatán. These wells were called ts’onot by the Mayans, and their meaning is “cavern of water.”

EK BALAM

Archaeological Site

The Ría Lagartos Special Biosphere Reserve received this recognition from SEDUE in 1982.

CHICHEN ITZA

Archaeological Site

It means in the Mayan language “the city on the edge of the well of the Itzáes”. It was declared by UNESCO in 1988 a World Heritage Site and since 2007 a wonder of the world.

NORTHERN BEACHES

of Yucatan

Among the best Yucatan beaches are Playa Norte (North Beach) and Playa Sur (South Beach) in Celestun.

MERIDA

City

The city of Mérida was founded in 1542 where it was the T ’Hó ceremonial center by Francisco de Montejo y León“ the young man ”, whose house still exists on one side of the main square.
